As a little kid in Okla., I remember my parents regularly filling the gas tank at the neighborhood Sinclair station. There, the brand’s skyscraping (or so it seemed) green Brontosaurus stood watch as adults fueled up and children wondered just how long before that dinosaur quivered to life. Nevertheless, Dino—as he was first introduced in 1930—proved a huge campaign hit for Sinclair and continues this day as the company’s icon at more than 1,500 stations in 29 states. Reese Energy Consulting today is following the latest news from Utah-based refiner Sinclair and Dallas-based refiner HollyFrontier, which will merge their refining, pipeline, and storage operations in a $2.6 billion deal. The combination also will create a new company known as HF Sinclair Corp. As part of the merger, Holly will acquire Sinclair’s two refineries in Wyo., 1,200 miles of pipeline, two crude oil terminals, a renewable diesel unit, and all those gas stations with Dino-branded merchandise for sale. Sinclair will retain its E&P assets. HollyFrontier operates refineries in Okla., Kan., N.M., and Utah, in addition to a lubricants facility and two specialty products centers.
